As the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) prepares for its annual International Roadcheck event from May 14-16, 2024, commercial motor vehicle operators across North America should be aware of what’s in store. This crucial three-day enforcement and compliance initiative, taking place across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, represents the largest such program globally, with inspections occurring nearly every minute over a 72-hour period.
This year, the focus will be sharply on tractor protection systems and the enforcement of alcohol and controlled substance regulations—a response to the increasing number of violations that pose a significant threat to roadway safety. These systems, essential for the safe operation of a vehicle, will be scrutinized, along with adherence to policies preventing alcohol and controlled substance use among drivers.
The CVSA will deploy certified inspectors at various stations and temporary sites to conduct thorough inspections. These will include the North American Standard Level I Inspection, which examines both vehicle safety and driver compliance. A vehicle passing this inspection without any critical issues may receive a CVSA decal, indicating compliance for up to three months.
For vehicles or drivers found with out-of-service violations, there will be immediate restrictions until these issues are resolved. The comprehensive inspection also serves as an educational touchpoint, aiming to increase both driver and public awareness about the importance of vehicle safety and compliance.
This event not only underscores the importance of regulatory compliance but also acts as a reminder for motor carriers to regularly check their fleets and drivers against the U.S. Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse to ensure compliance and enhance roadway safety.

Such initiatives highlight the ongoing commitment to maintaining and improving road safety, reflecting both the regulatory framework’s stringency and the transport industry’s compliance landscape.
